What makes a good gym?
So I’ve got a theory.
Thought of it the other day.
It’s been based on multiple conversations with people over the years.
But the penny really dropped for me recently.
“The nicer the gym, the worse you train”
Can anyone genuinely disagree with that?
Let me know 🤷♂️
>
I think it all comes down to the environment.
Fluffy towels
Beautiful surroundings
Pristine, almost unused equipment
Health club/spa vibe
Countless ‘add ons’ (sauna, steam room, pool, laundry service etc)
All of which are nice to have.
Don’t get me wrong.
But none of which help you train hard.
Do they?
If anything …
The environment is TOO nice.
TOO comfortable.
TOO relaxing.
TOO luxurious.
So it takes away from the primary aim of going to the gym.
>
And if you’re serious about your training …
You don’t really want that.
Therefore … the opposite is true.
Training in an environment you don’t want to be in for very long.
Maybe 60 minutes max.
Will probably yield better training results.
>
Other members will be there to train hard, and that rubs off on you
And not just going there for the sauna/steam room/cafe / general chit chat
Because it’s not a luxurious environment, you won’t want to be there for long
Get in, train hard, no messing around, then leave
You won’t get penalised for training hard
You’ll be able to grunt a bit, show some controlled aggression & throw your weights around sensibly, without getting told off for ‘disturbing the other members’
There’s usually more & better equipment
Because they’re not spending money on much else. Dumbbells & barbells are largely the same wherever you go, and those are what you’re using mostly anyway.
Saves you a ton of ££ (£500 p/m v £35 p/m)
Which you can then invest into good quality, results-driven PT. The ROI comes down to fluffy towels versus body composition results
PureGym > Equinox
There, I said it 😅
Have a good one.
